Congratulations Vishwanathan Anand! What a news, a double whammy in a space of less than 07 days –first India becoming 20-20 World Cricket Champions and then news about Anand’s title win.
Anand achieved this distinction by a short 20-move draw against Peter Leko of Hungary in the 14th and final round of the Championship in Mexico City on Saturday night. He played Ruy Lopez Marshall game to achieve this crown by scoring 9 out of 14 points, finishing a full point ahead of Kramnik and Gelfand.
It appears that Mexico has been a happy hunting ground for Anand because six months back he took over as World No 1 in Elo ratings, soon after winning the Morelia-Linares tournament.
Anand conveyed his high regard for Mexician hospitality by opining that "not in so many places you can find as many chess fans as here. I always feel great in Mexico."
The late thirties pushing handsome Anand summed up his reaction to this superlative performance by saying "You can imagine how I feel. This is something very special for me."
Anand is one of the only four players in history to have gone past the 2,800-Elo ratings barrier, taking home with him a US $390,000 cheque.
This is not the first time that Anand has won world chess title. In 2000 also he had won the official FIDE World Championships, played in India and Iran. However, due to the split in World Chess body, some top stars, including Kramnik had not played then. For this reason the present victory has a special meaning for Anand.
This title victory of Anand has not only made all Indians proud but will also serve as an inspiration to many “budding Anands”.
